Interview Feature: EP 43 – Beyond Toughing It Out on “Female Guides Requested” Podcast

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with my friend Ting Ting on her podcast, Female Guides Requested, for Episode 43: Beyond Toughing It Out. It was a deeply personal conversation where we explored the twists and turns of my career—from teaching in a K-12 classroom to outdoor education to EMS—and the life experiences that shaped me along the way.

Reflections on My Journey

Looking back, my path has been anything but straightforward. I started with a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching credential in Biological Sciences. While teaching middle school science, I also worked as a Los Angeles County Fire Department Ocean Lifeguard and EMT. Eventually, I stepped away from traditional education to pursue my love of the outdoors, guiding and instructing in mountaineering, backpacking, and sea kayaking.

The Highs, the Lows, and the Lessons Learned

In this conversation, I opened up about:

  • My years guiding and what I loved most about expedition-based learning.
  • How the pandemic changed my direction.
  • The unexpected path from marine science to teaching and outdoor education.
  • The burnout I experienced in K-12 education and juggling multiple jobs.
  • An ankle injury that forced me to reevaluate my future.
  • The struggles I faced with depression after a near-death accident—and what helped me move forward.
  • The ongoing challenge of balancing work, passion, and self-care.

A Conversation That Matters

This interview wasn’t just about my career; it was about the realities of change, resilience, and learning to listen to yourself when the path ahead is uncertain. It was vulnerable, honest, and full of moments that I hope will resonate with others who have faced similar crossroads.
