This article is part of the Growth and Balance Series, a collection of personal reflections on pursuing meaningful goals while navigating the realities of life. In this series, I explore how to set structured, intentional goals—and just as importantly, how to recognize when to pause, pivot, or exercise patience. From training commitments to mindset shifts, the series highlights both the discipline of ambition and the wisdom of balance.

Introduction

Setting meaningful goals can be transformative, but success depends on more than ambition. It requires structure, reflection, and accountability. In this first part of my personal Growth and Balance Series, I share the process I used to prepare for the Iron Palm Level 1 Procedure, a physically and mentally demanding commitment that challenged me in new ways.

Whether you’re training, pursuing professional growth, or seeking personal milestones, I hope this example of structured goal setting helps you reflect on your own approach.


My Why: Goals Beyond the Physical

For me, Iron Palm wasn’t just about developing the physical ability to break coconuts. It was about the mental discipline, curiosity, and the joy of personal growth. It was about honoring the people who helped me recover from a traumatic brain injury, leading by example for my students, and exploring the connection between mind and body.


Step 1: Reflection with SWOT

Before setting goals, I always start with self-reflection:

  • Strengths: What am I good at? What advantages do I have?
  • Weaknesses: What internal barriers could interfere?
  • Opportunities: What external factors can help me succeed?
  • Threats: What challenges or obstacles could derail me?

Step 2: Structuring SMARTER Goals

Using the SMARTER framework keeps goals clear and actionable:

  • Specific – Define exactly what you will achieve.
  • Measurable – Track progress with tangible markers.
  • Attainable – Ensure it’s realistic within your resources.
  • Relevant – Align with your deeper purpose.
  • Time-Specific – Set deadlines.
  • Evaluate – Regularly reflect on progress.
  • Revise – Adapt goals if necessary.

My Goal Example: Complete the Iron Palm Level 1 and 3-Star procedures by February, with daily training, journaling, and progress tracking, while using mentors and accountability partners.

Step 3: Plan of Attack (POA)

A SMART goal is only as good as your action plan:

  • Preparation Stage POA: Scheduling time, securing resources, and prepping materials.
  • Execution Stage POA: Daily checklist, accountability check-ins, reflection points.
  • Adjustment Stage POA: Regularly revisiting progress, adjusting actions if needed.

October 11: Attend private lesson with Sifu Dennis at 11:30 a.m. to learn form steps and take notes.

Daily Practice (October 11–18): Practice the form with eyes open 5 times daily.

By October 18: Rewrite notes to clarify key points and steps.

October 15 (Optional): Schedule a follow-up private lesson to refine movements. (Cancelled due to illness—demonstrates flexibility in goal execution.)

October 19–27: Progress to practicing form with eyes closed 5 times daily.


Step 4: Accountability Partners

Involving others builds support and accountability. I shared my goals with trusted mentors and training partners who kept me motivated on tough days.


Final Reflection

Goal setting is more than just writing objectives—it’s a living process. By reflecting, planning, and adapting, we build resilience alongside achievement. As I prepared for Iron Palm, this structure helped me navigate the mental and physical demands of training while staying aligned with my deeper purpose.

In Part 2: Exercising Patience, I reflect on how even with strong goals, sometimes life calls for adjustment, and how learning to pivot is just as valuable as persistence.
